Subaru currently provides the Subaru Select Monitor III in the dealerships for vehicle diagnosis. All other service
applications are loaded on a local desktop PC in the dealership, or are available online.
With the current Select Monitor II in process of being phased out, the next generation diagnostic application,
the Subaru Select Monitor III (SSM III) will be introduced. Subaru is therefore launching the “Subaru Diagnostic
System (SDS)”. The SDS will be a required essential diagnostic tool for all Subaru Dealerships and will be launching
in the 1st quarter of 2005.
SSMIII, Subaru vehicle diagnostic software will be a PC based application, which will communicate with the vehicle via
a “Subaru Diagnostic Interface” (SDI), allowing the technician to read parameter data. The SDS will be the complete
Diagnostic and Service Information System based on a Wireless PC platform.
In addition to the SSMIII, SDS will allow technicians access to various applications, which will aid them in their
diagnosis. Icons residing on a Graphical User Interface (GUI) located on the PC will mark the applications.
GUI Applications include the following:
Subaru Select Monitor III (SMIII)
Image Loader (for use with the NSM)
Flash Write (for ECM reprogramming)
Subaru Technical Information Systems (STIS)
Subaru Learning Management System (future SLMS)
Subaru.Com (for Internet Exploring)
Vehicle Claim History
Quality Monitoring Report
Vehicle Coverage Inquiry
Electronic Parts Catalog (future EPC)
Subaru Special Tools Catalog
SDS consists of 3 aspects:
1. Required Internet Broadband Connection and Managed Firewall Service in all dealerships. The minimum internet connection speed required for the SDS program is 384kb/second. Fixed IP addresses are an additional requirement. If the existing service meets these two requirements, upgraded broadband service will not be required. This will help achieve the following key objectives:
Enable the technicians to have secure access to all online service information in a continuous and expedited manner.
Enable Subaru to keep the diagnostic tools up-to-date at all times and ensure that technicians have the most current information for all diagnostic procedures, including ECM reprogramming files.
Enable centralized management of SDS for remote support and system updates.
Provide SDS with protection from the public Internet, managed access to Subaru’s online service applications and isolation from the Dealer Local Area Network (LAN).
A broadband internet connection (if required) and managed firewall shall be installed in the dealership on a lease basis, as part of the Managed Broadband Solution.
2. Wireless Network at all dealerships – this will enable technicians to have access to all the service information/applications at the ‘point-of-need’. It will allow technicians more mobility, and they will be able to refer to service information anywhere within the service area.
3. Laptop Computer with SDS Graphical User Interface (GUI) – This will provide the technicians with a state-of-the-art graphical interface and touch screen enabled diagnostic tool. It will provide vehicle data-stream information and service information at a single platform. The laptop will have a user friendly graphical user interface for easy access to all the applications on the diagnostic tool. The SSMIII PC software, Flashwrite, and Image Loader will be part of the applications suite for complete diagnostics capability using the current Select Monitor or new SSMIII.
MAIN COMPONENTS OF THE SDS:
Content of SDS kit and hardware
Panasonic Toughbook CF-18 SDS laptop
The SDS laptop is a military specification rugged notebook and will act as the primary diagnostics and service information tool for Subaru dealers. It will be wirelessly connected to the Internet.

DC-DC Car Adapter
External CD-R/RW DVD Drive
Select Monitor III

Internet and Firewall Optional Solutions Each dealer will have three additional options for High Speed Internet Connection and Firewall solutions.
Option1: Internet Service in the Service Area – Required: essential for the program
Option 2: Internet Service in the customer waiting area – Hot Spot – This would be optional
Option 3: Internet service for the Dealer’s local area network. – This would be optional
Online Dealer Survey Portal The Dealer will be required to indicate their choices from the three options above during the online survey as this will determine the Broadband and Firewall Installation and Configuration Specifications. An online dealer survey will be implemented to act as a single point of entry for the surveying of all Subaru dealers to develop dealership site specific SDS Managed Broadband Solution requirements. The online survey will be taken on the SubaruDE.net Website.
Dealer Sign-In or Registration services
Dealer to enter ‘Dealer Code’
Dealer to setup password for future SubaruDE.net activity
Follow-up calls resultant from survey

On-Site Dealer Survey (if required)
Based on the results of the Web based Dealer Survey, it may be necessary to dispatch a certified systems integrator to Subaru dealers for an *on-site network analysis and survey.
On-Site survey would entail the following:
Performing an RF (radio frequency) site survey to map wireless network coverage
Perform a dealership network analysis
Document dealership network topology
Generating a dealership site specific bill of materials
Generate site specific customer quotation
*An onsite survey will be a separately billed activity including time, materials and travel costs and will not be covered in the essential pricing.
